Built in 1622, the Sangedatsumon
is all that remains of Zojoji’s original construction
from Japan’s Edo period.
The gate measures 21 meters high,
28.7 meters wide, and 17.6 meters deep.
Casting of the Daibonsho
was completed in 1673.
It is 3.33 meters high,
1.76 meters in diameter
and weighs 15 tons.
Zojoji was originally founded
in the Kanto region in 1393.
In 1598 Zojoji was moved to it’s current location
after Ieyasu Tokugawa established his
shogun government in Edo
(the former name of Tokyo).
It was then that Zojoji
became the official temple
of the Tokugawa family.
Inside the Tokugawa mausoleum
are the tombs of six Tokugawa shoguns,
their wives, and children.
It is an enduring legacy of Japan’s prosperous Edo period.
