Mount Nokogiri, known in Japan
as Nokogiri Yama, is located
in Chiba Prefecture
on the west side of
the Boso Peninsula.

The best way to make your way
up the mountain is the
Nokogiri Yama Ropeway.
You’ll have a great view
all the way to the top and
it will give you a complete sense
of how high the mountain is.

The view from the Rurikou Observatory
provides a wide panorama that includes
Tokyo Bay, the Kanto area, and
on a clear day, even Mount Fuji.

Mount Nokogiri has a height of
330 meters above sea level.
From the 14th to 18th century
it was the site of a stone quarry
which left the top of the mountain
jagged like the edge of a saw.
The name “Nokogiri Yama” means
literally “saw mountain” in Japanese.

An Arhat, which is called a rakan
or arakan in Japanese, is a
disciple of Buddha that
has achieved Nirvana.

This sign indicates that the statue
represents a perspiring Buddhist deity
that has the power to
create pleasurable happiness.

Measuring 31 meters high,
the Nihon-ji Daibutsu is the
largest stone statue of Buddha in Japan.
It is the result of 3 years of work
and was completed in 1783.
