Kanazawa Castle Park is located
in the city of Kanazawa,
the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture.
The Ishikawa Mon
was constructed in 1788.
It was designated as an
Important National Cultural Property
in 1950.
The buildings you see here
are part of a reconstruction project
that was completed in July, 2001.
Before this reconstruction began,
the area was excavated
to find evidence
of the original structures.
This lead to new insight
into the construction techniques
used at that time.
The Honmaru was the main tower
of Kanazawa Castle and served
as the command center for the castle.
It was built in 1583 by Toshiie Maeda,
the first lord of the Maeda clan
to reside at Kanazawa Castle.
The Honmaru was
destroyed by fire in 1631.
The Tsurumaru Souko
was designed and built
with exceptionally thick walls
and it’s construction was completed
sometime near the end of the Edo period.
